We’re delighted to welcome Tam McManus as our exclusive Rangers columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…
Tam McManus wouldn’t be surprised to see Rangers reignite their interest in Oli McBurnie in January with the striker’s contract at Sheffield United due to expire next year.
McBurnie, 26, is a well-known Rangers fan and was linked with a move to Ibrox in May 2021 when the Daily Mail reported that he was valued at £15million by the Blades.
But as the Scotland international’s contract is due to run out in the coming summer [The Star], the Gers will be able to approach him on a pre-contract deal as early as January.
With Giovanni van Bronckhorst gone, McManus wonders whether the Light Blues will now start to focus on adding more Scottish players – like McBurnie – to the squad after he also saw speculation linking Kenny McLean with a move to Govan.
“He’s done okay with Sheffield United,” McManus told Ibrox News. “He went a long, long time without scoring a goal but now he’s banged in four or five in his last few games.
“I don’t know if his goalscoring record would stand up to the scrutiny at Rangers but he’s a massive Rangers supporter and that immediately buys into the fans.
“If he’s out of contract, you can get him for nothing. But let’s not forget he cost [up to £20million].
“If you’re getting a guy like that for free then I think Rangers would probably take him.
“Kenny McLean is another one who I’ve seen linked. Again, he’s another Rangers supporter and he’s Scottish but I don’t know if that’s agents just trying to push their players for a move or if there’s genuinely something in it.
“Maybe it’s a change of tact from Rangers to go out and sign a lot of Scottish players.
“They’ve seemed to go down the foreign market successfully up until the last window.
“I think that was a terrible window for Rangers and the manager paid for it with his job.
“I don’t know if it’s a change of direction for them to go for Scottish players.”
McBurnie has scored nine goals in 17 Championship appearances for Sheffield United this season but has only bagged 17 goals in his 112 outings for the Blades since his arrival in South Yorkshire in August 2019.
McLean has signed a new contract at Norwich since the Scottish Daily Express reported on 20 November that the Light Blues are interested in him.
In other Rangers news, an approach has been made for a new manager – and it’s not Michael Beale.
