Steven Gerrard may have never left Rangers if Dave King hadn’t – Chris Jack

Steven Gerrard may have never left Rangers had Dave King remained in position as the club’s chairman, according to The Herald’s Chris Jack.

The former England international opted to leave Ibrox after winning the Premiership in an invincible season in 2020-21 to join Premier League side Aston Villa.

He has since been sacked by the Villans after failing to make the grade but Jack believes that he may have still been in post in Glasgow if King hadn’t been replaced by Douglas Park.

“What I would say on Dave is that he is very aware of what is going on at the club,” Jack said to the Blueheart 1872 podcast. “So he may not be on the board or a director anymore, but he is still aware of the squad, the manager, what’s going on behind-the-scenes and at boardroom level.

“If Dave King had still been at Rangers then Steven Gerrard would not have left the football club, that’s a fairly straightforward one.”

Worse off

Things have gone south for both Rangers and Gerrard since they parted ways and it wouldn’t be the worst idea to reunite if Park decides to sack Giovanni van Bronckhorst in the coming weeks.

The Dutchman has been unable to resurrect the Gers after throwing away a decent lead in the Premiership last season and things have gone very poorly this time around with Celtic already nine points clear.

He did make a Europa League final but their Champions League exploits this season were woeful and he has not been able to back it up domestically either.

Gerrard is now a free agent again as he was when the Bears first brought him north of the border so he could easily begin to right the wrongs of van Bronckhorst given the time.

Change has to be afoot soon at Ibrox, though, because Rangers cannot keep living so far behind their Old Firm rivals and expect everything to be fine.

In other Rangers news, this player could have played his final game for the club already as injury problems continue to haunt him.
