Journalist shares ‘hysteria’ verdict around Ross Wilson blame game at Rangers

Rangers Review journalist Ally Bain believes there is a lot of “hysteria” and “hype” surrounding the blame aimed at Ross Wilson’s recruitment at Ibrox.

There have been plenty of questions asked of Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Wilson in recent weeks with many players performing well below the level required.

However, Bain feels the criticism aimed at Wilson isn’t justified, with there being a lot more positives than negatives in terms of recruitment.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst

Talking on Rangers Review (30:43, 16 November), he said: “From a recruitment perspective, there are a lot more positives than negatives. This whole idea that Ross Wilson needs to be sent away to an island somewhere, I am not really sure I buy into it.

“It’s part of the hysteria and hype when we aren’t winning, so somebody needs the blame put on them. They need to box clever [in terms of recruitment]. If we’ve got the money we need to spend it more wisely, I think that’s the lesson to be learned.”

Mitigating factors

For whatever reason, the stars have certainly not aligned for Rangers in recent months, with vast swathes of the squad out injured and players severely underperforming. When looking at it objectively, some of the Gers’ summer additions have impressed.

Tom Lawrence was probably the Light Blues’ player of the season before his injury, Antonio Colak has been a prolific signing, Malik Tillman has had impressive moments, Ridvan Yilmaz has been blighted by injury, and Rabbi Matondo has shown glimpses.

If injuries and poor form overall hadn’t taken its toll then it could have been a different story for the Gers. Now the pressure is on van Bronckhorst to find a tune out of this group of players when his side face Hibernian at Ibrox in 15 December.

The 47-year-old can ill afford to drop more points with Celtic now nine points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership table. It seems as if the Light Blues will need to go on a near perfect run of form to give The Hoops something to think about when it comes to the title
