Pundit shares Alex Lowry verdict at Rangers as Giovanni van Bronckhorst makes decision on midfield sensation

We’re delighted to welcome Tam McManus as our exclusive Rangers columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…

Rangers fans want to sign more of Alex Lowry in the Scottish Premiership, according to Tam McManus.

Lowry, 19, has played just once in the senior side this season, featuring for just six minutes as a substitute in the 3-1 defeat to Ajax at Ibrox on 1 November.

The attacking midfielder has missed a good chunk of the season with a knee injury but he’s been playing for the B team in the Lowland League since 18 October.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst has been under immense pressure in the last couple of months but has opted against playing Lowry – or even naming him in his matchday squad – despite the poor form of his senior players in the Premiership.

McManus believes that Lowry would show more for the side than the likes of Malik Tillman and Rabbi Matondo, who’ve been either inconsistent or extremely poor since their arrivals in the summer.

“He picked up an injury a couple of months back from a bad tackle but if you’re the Rangers manager and you’re a Rangers supporter, you want to see young Scottish players coming through,” McManus told Ibrox News.

I don’t think Lowry would let anyone down.

Look at guys who’ve come in like Tillman and Matondo, they haven’t been that great.

Rangers fans would get behind somebody like Lowry more because he’s a young Scottish player who’s come through the ranks.

He doesn’t seem to be getting the opportunity but he could be getting minutes in the B team before coming back into the first team.

He’s somebody who should be getting more [first-team] game-time, Rangers fans want to see him more than the loan players.”

Lowry has played eight times in total for the Rangers senior side.

Last season, he scored two goals and supplied two assists and played a man-of-the-match-worthy 90 minutes against Hearts on the final day of the campaign.
