Pundit finds Steven Davis situation at Rangers unbelievable as he shares Giovanni van Bronckhorst verdict
Frank McAvennie has suggested that he can’t believe Rangers midfielder Steven Davis doesn’t play regularly at the club despite his age.
The 37-year-old central midfielder has made only three starts in the Scottish Premiership this season, and a further four appearances have come from the bench.
Giovanni van Bronckhorst is under a lot of pressure at the moment and he is fighting to save his job after a poor run of results.

McAvennie feels that a big part of the current problem is down to poor recruitment, and he is unsure whether the Dutchman can be fully blamed for this.
“I can’t believe Steven Davis doesn’t play more often. Even though he’s nearly 38, I would pick him every week because he keeps them moving,” said McAvennie, as quoted by The Scottish Sun.
“Gio has shown he’s a good manager by winning trophies elsewhere, but they’ve sold their best players and the recruitment’s been poor. Is that down to him? I don’t think so.”
Needs to go
Davis is a quality midfielder who has been a great servant for the club. Even at 37, he brings loads of quality to the side.
Rangers extended his contract during the summer after he played a big role for the club in the Europa League last season.
The question is – should he play regularly? If the Bears have to rely on a 37-year-old midfielder who has lost his pace, then seriously question marks will be raised on the club’s recruitment policy.

Having said that, Davis should play more regularly, even if it means a regular role from the bench. He has the ability to dictate the tempo of the game, and the Bears should use him properly.
Regarding Van Bronckhorst, the club will make a huge mistake if they stick with him. You can point out poor recruitment and player underperforming and all that, but it’s the manager’s job to motivate them.
It’s true that Van Bronckhorst solely can’t be blamed for recruitment, but he hasn’t done enough this season to justify that he deserves time to turn it around.
