Alfredo Morelos should’ve been driven to airport after big-money Rangers development – John McGarry

John McGarry believes Rangers are being made to regret rejecting a big-money move for Alfredo Morelos back in 2020.

Morelos is into his sixth season as a Rangers player, and the 26-year-old Colombian striker is enduring one of his toughest campaigns to date with just three goals in 12 appearances.

Not only is Morelos struggling more in front of goal, but he’s also had to tussle for his starting spot with new signing Antonio Colak.

Back in 2020, McGarry has revealed that Lille had a £16million bid rejected for the striker – a rejection that McGarry thinks Rangers are beginning to regret.

Via his Scottish Daily Mail column (15 November, page 69), McGarry wrote: “[Giovanni] van Bronckhorst is by no means the only one who’s culpable for this mess.

“Back in 2020, the club rejected a £16million bid from Lille for the Colombian. For all his undoubted talent, Morelos has already shown that he was high-maintenance and unreliable. They should’ve driven him to the airport.

“Out of condition by the time he belatedly returned to the fold against Kilmarnock on August 6, he cost his team by being set off for a flying arm.

“With his team-mates clearly unimpressed by his attitude, Van Bronckhorst axed him from the trip to play PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League.”

Stamp it out

Morelos has always been a feisty character since he arrived at Ibrox, and he’s proved that under the right manager he can perform at an incredible level.

But when his focus slips and attitude starts to show, it’s down to the manager to reel him back in. It seems that Van Bronckhorst has had so much on his plate this year that he’s overlooked Morelos and his poor performances.

Rangers

So often this season, Rangers have needed a match-winner to make the difference in tight games. Morelos is usually to go-to man in that scenario, but Van Bronckhorst has been sharing his spoils with Antonio Colak up front.

Whether or not the Croatian’s arrival has upset Morelos is only for him to know. But he needs to quickly refocus on performing and scoring for Rangers – Van Bronckhorst has a pivotal role to play in getting him back up and running.

If Gers are to catch Celtic’s nine-point lead, they’re going to need all of their biggest stars to turn up. Morelos hasn’t so far this season, but there’s always time for a comeback.
