Rangers want to avoid Celtic jab as Kevin Muscat could replace Giovanni van Bronckhorst
Rangers could look to appoint Kevin Muscat as their new manager if they sack Giovanni van Bronckhorst, but are wary of his links to Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou.
Van Bronckhorst is under severe pressure after falling nine points behind Celtic in the SPFL title race, while also overseeing the worst Champions League campaign in history as Rangers finished with six defeats in six games and a goal difference of -20.
When asked who the replacement would be if Van Bronckhorst was sacked during the World Cup break, journalist Keith Jackson told Daily Record (14 November) believes that Rangers could see Kevin Muscat as the best man for the job but are aware of the jibes that could follow.

“Of all the names floating about Kevin Muscat is one of the most intriguing,” he said.
“But Rangers won’t want to be accused of appointing Ange Postecoglou’s apprentice – even if they believe Aussie is the best man for the job.”

Muscat has already followed in Postecoglou’s footsteps as a manager, winning the Japanese League with the Yokohama F. Marinos just as the Aussie did back in 2019.
And the ex-Rangers player has previously labelled Postecoglou as a mentor and a friend, so should he get the job in the Ibrox hotseat it’s very possible that the Old Firm games would see a label of master v apprentice shoved onto them.
Rangers will want to avoid looking like Celtic’s little brothers, and following their blueprint after the success that they have had, but if they really believe that Muscat is the right man for the job then they have to do it.
It’s clear to anyone with eyes that Van Bronckhorst’s methods and style aren’t suited to the club anymore and he has to go, and bringing in someone with some innovation and an attacking style that already knows Rangers would be a big boost.
The next week or so will be huge for the manager’s future, and if the right decision is made then Muscat is clearly someone to keep an eye on.
