Rangers: Ross Wilson to consider ‘severance package’ to sack Giovanni van Bronckhorst

Ross Wilson will surely be considering the cost of Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s severance package at Rangers after the defeat at St Mirren on Saturday, according to Scottish Mail on Sunday columnist Gary Keown.

The Dutchman’s future at Ibrox appears to be on a knife-edge after the Light Blues laboured to a 1-1 draw in Paisley, thanks to a late James Tavernier penalty.

Keown has now suggested that Wilson should be ready to pay not just van Bronckhorst’s severance package but also his own as the Ibrox turmoil continues.

Writing in the Scottish Mail on Sunday (13 November, page 102), Keown said: “Something tells you that there is little chance of Wilson flashing the pearlies for the cameras this January, though, and telling everyone who will listen on RangersTV just how all those calls o the contacts that got him Ramsey paid off again.

“It is more likely to be spent reflecting on the cost of van Bronckhorst’s surely-imminent severance package – and maybe even counting his own, if there’s any justice – as Celtic and all their new signings disappear into the distance.”

Mind made up

Wilson has to come to a decision along with his fellow board members very soon so he can get going with either finding van Bronckhorst’s replacement or finding the funding to back him in January.

With the World Cup break now here, there is no sense in delaying the decision to sack him, should that be the conclusion they come to, much longer because there are no immediate games that need a manager in place.

Time has to be left to allow a proper search and due diligence to be done about who the next manager must be and give them a chance to get to know the squad before the season kicks off again in December.

Wilson might not even be in place to take that decision if Keown’s suggestion turns out to be correct and that would be a welcome end to an era for Rangers fans.

Celtic have very clearly got the upper hand in the titanic Old Firm battle at the moment and something must change at Ibrox to turn the tide in favour of the blue side of Glasgow.

In other Rangers news, the boss has been recommended to “flee the country” after a turbulent period at Ibrox.
