Jeff Winter destroys Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos after incident v St Mirren

Former Premier League referee Jeff Winter made a scathing assessment of Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos in Saturday afternoon’s match against St Mirren.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side started the day seven points behind league leaders Celtic and after a goalless opening 45 minutes needed a quick start to the second half.

However, Morelos had other ideas as he managed to pick up a yellow card in the opening moments after the break when smashing straight into Ethan Erhahon from the kick-off.

The incident led Winter to Tweet: “Morelos is an idiot” as he backed up referee Kevin Clancy – the referee for Saturday’s fixture.

Some things never change

In such a decisive game in Van Bronckhorst’s tenure as Rangers boss, Morelos really should have known better.

Throughout the first half, Morelos struggled to make a decisive impact and was largely anonymous as Rangers laboured through another goalless opening 45 minutes. The lack of a target man clearly left the side bereft of ideas.

After what could be the Dutch manager’s final Rangers team talk, experienced players such as Morelos should have been leading from the front and trying to catch St Mirren napping.

A leopard never changes its spots though it seems, and despite the goals which Morelos so evidently has brought Rangers in the past, he is a liability and a player you wouldn’t want to play beside when trying to dig yourselves out of a hole.

The fact St Mirren scored just two minutes later isn’t directly the striker’s fault, but the slack hold-up play, loose passing, and lazy pressing all afternoon long will have fans pulling their hair out over this hugely talented forward.
