Giovanni van Bronckhorst needs serious January cash if he survives Rangers sack

Rangers need to back their manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst in the January window, if he avoids the sack, according to journalist Andy Newport.

The Bears are seven points behind Celtic in the Scottish Premiership title, and the Daily Record journalist has suggested that the Dutchman needs funds to rebuild the squad in January.

Rangers face St Mirren away from home on Saturday (12 November) in the Premiership, and anything less than three points would be considered a huge disappointment.

“They’re a long way back and while there have been plenty previous occasions when teams have overturned a seven-point deficit, there’s little hope for Rangers unless drastic changes are made at Ibrox. If van Bronckhorst stays, he needs funds to rebuild in January,” wrote Newport for the Daily Record.

Little hope

Newport is absolutely spot on here. The likes of Barry Ferguson and others have urged the Rangers board to back their manager during this crisis in the January window.

The recent results have been very disappointing, and it feels the club need a drastic change, which can only happen after the World Cup break.

Can Rangers close the gap with Celtic? In theory, they can. But the problem is, Celtic are looking unstoppable at the moment in the Premiership and they need to drop points as well.

Most importantly, the Bears need to sort out their own mess. Big decisions need to be taken over the futures of Alfredo Morelos, Ryan Kent and Ryan Jack, and serious funding is required to revamp the squad.

Should they sell fringe players like Kemar Roofe and make space for new additions?

Apart from Antonio Colak and possibly Malik Tillman, none of the summer signings have made an impact. There is a dearth of creativity in the side, and the cub should address that as well in January.

Put simply, a drastic change is needed – in terms of transfers, playing style, and overall philosophy.
