Rangers ready £5m bid to beat Celtic to transfer of Bristol City forward Antoine Semenyo

Rangers are readying a bid of £5million to sign Antonio Semenyo from Bristol City in January, according to leading African journalist Edmund Okai Gyimah.

Writing on the Sports World Ghana website, the Ghanaian journalist, who’s been voted as one of the top 10 journalists in Africa, reported that Semeyo, 22, has been a long-time target of Celtic.

However, it is understood that Rangers are prepared to make a move for the Ghana centre-forward in January when he enters the final six months of his contract.

How much?

It’s pretty unbelievable that Rangers would pay £5million for a player who they could land on a pre-contract deal as early as 1 January.

While that would mean waiting until the summer to welcome Semenyo to Ibrox, we’d much rather wait to grab him on a free transfer than shell out that kind of money.

Rangers spent a fair whack on the likes of Ben Davies, Rabbi Matondo and Ridvan Yilmaz in the summer transfer window but none of them cost more than £5million.

Malik Tillman, if he joins permanently from Bayern Munich, would cost just more than that but he’s a young American international who’ll have proven himself at Ibrox arriving from the biggest club in Germany.

It would be ridiculous to pay that sort of money for Semenyo.

And it becomes even more ludicrous when you look at the London-born striker’s stats because since joining Bristol City in 2018, he’s scored just 13 goals and played 115 times.

Gyimah is meant to be a top African journalist but we just cannot believe this for one second.

In other Rangers news, this former Premier League manager is a “standout” choice to replace van Bronckhorst if he’s sacked.
