Rangers: Lawyer of James Tavernier rips into police after not guilty verdict

James Tavernier’s lawyer has not held back on the Scottish police after the Rangers captain was cleared of speeding on Tuesday (8 November).

The 31-year-old had been charged with the offence but a hearing in court saw the judge declare the skipper not guilty due to inconsistent evidence given by the arresting officers.

Tavernier had rejected claims that he had speeded unnecessarily and did not appreciate the way the two officers handled the situation at the time which sparked his lawyer, Aamer Anwar, to take aim at the police.

“If you cannot afford to fight it and instruct lawyers, you’re very rarely going to go and get legal aid in that case. That means it’s your word against two officers,” he said, as quoted by The Times.

“Sadly we are in a position whereby we know that police officers do not always tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, inconsistencies do happen.”

“Police officers do get it wrong, they can also have a bad day, but they wear a uniform and are expected to tell the truth when they come to court, they take an oath to uphold the rule of law.

“They don’t always in all circumstances, I’m not saying that happened in this case, but generally speaking that doesn’t always happen.”

Heart of gold

For many Rangers fans, it would seem almost impossible to imagine Tavernier doing anything untoward or illegal away from football because he conducts himself so well at all times when representing the club.

On the pitch, he can be a different animal and is able to use the tricks of the trade to get his way but he would surely never purposely speed or do anything of harm to anybody in public.

Now that this debacle has been put to bed for good, Tavernier can begin to find his true form on the pitch again having looked a shadow of his usual dominant self at times in this difficult run for the Light Blues.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst needs his captain to be firing on all cylinders right now with his job really under pressure after Celtic pulled out a seven-point lead in the Premiership.

There is only one game to go in the run-up to the World Cup break kicks into gear so there is not long for the Englishman to get back to his best.
