Davie Selke hands in transfer request after Rangers transfer move

Hertha Berlin forward Davie Selkie has handed in a transfer request ahead of a January exit, with Rangers among the clubs interested in him, say BILD.

The German has started just twice in the Bundesliga this season and scored his first goal of the season over the weekend, but after just 209 minutes of action he has decided to leave the club and move on.

His current contract expires in the summer, meaning he could be available on a free transfer or pre-contract, but he wants to leave this winter.

Hertha have been told of his request but are yet to make a decision, as they are keen to get his £50k p/w wages off their books but are also aware that there is a market for the player and they could sell him rather than let him leave for free.

Rangers, West Brom, FC Basel, FC Copenhagen plus clubs from Turkey and Greece were interested during the summer, while Italian clubs have also shown an interest in his signature.

Morelos replacement?

Antonio Colak joined in the summer and has firmly established himself as the number one striker at the club ahead of Alfredo Morelos, who is in a similar position to Selke at Ibrox.

The Colombian’s contract expires in the summer and he has found playing time limited, so it’s possible that Rangers would look to get a deal done that would see him come in as a replacement.

But if he wants guaranteed playing time Ibrox is unlikely to be the place he gets it, and that explains why he is leaning towards a move to Italy.

With that said, it’s interesting that the club are once again knocking around in the bargain bucket of a market for the transfer window despite all the extra cash they should have brought in from qualifying for the Champions League and competing in the group stages.

It’s another sign that the board aren’t willing to invest in the playing squad and should offer more concerns that this squad won’t be improved upon adequately any time soon.
