James Tavernier speaks out after being confronted by Rangers fans in video clip

James Tavernier has responded after he was filmed talking to fans after Rangers suffered a damaging 2-1 Scottish Premiership defeat to St Johnstone.

Footage emerged on Sunday (6 November) outside McDiarmid Park of the Light Blues skipper talking to a number of angered fans.

The 31-year-old has since addressed what happened in his latest press conference ahead of the Gers’ Scottish Premiership fixture against Hearts.

“It’s understandable to hear the thoughts of the fans after a poor result. I am the captain and I am there to listen to the fans. We need to improve and perform,” he said (Rangers official Twitter, 8 November).

Less talking, more doing

Of course, the Gers skipper is going to respond to fans but ultimately more must be done on the pitch to rectify their current performance levels. Tavernier did get on the scoresheet at the weekend but yet again struggled to be the creative force he has previously been for the Gers.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst is clearly under immense pressure at the moment after a miserable start to the 2022/23 season, but this group of players have got to offer more than they currently are. They may have grown tired of their boss’ methods, but that doesn’t mean they should stop working hard.

Rangers

If a change is to be made, the upcoming World Cup break looks like the ideal time for Rangers to make a change in the dugout. A new man could come in and get his thoughts across to the players without having the immediate pressure of getting results.

If the Gers fail to beat Hearts at Ibrox then the writing could very much be on the wall for van Bronckhorst.
