Barry Ferguson makes ‘clear’ Giovanni van Bronckhorst sack claim as Rangers ‘need to react’

Pressure is piling on Giovanni van Bronckhorst at Rangers, but Barry Ferguson believes the Dutchman will be given more time.

After a 2-1 loss to St Johnstone left Rangers seven points adrift from rivals Celtic in the title race, calls for Van Bronckhorst’s sacking have exponentially increased.

The Dutchman has hardly been in the Ibrox hot seat a year, but a torrid Champions League run and some unconvincing form in the league has left him on the brink of being sacked.

However, former Gers player Ferguson believes he’ll be given the World Cup break to try and turn things around.

Speaking via The Go Radio Football Show (7 November), Ferguson said: “He’s got a contract until 2025 and a number of backroom staff, four or five coaches.

“It’s clear he’s going to go until the World Cup break and see what happens from there. But I just feel like I’m repeating myself.

“You need a response, you need to react, you need more aggression.’ I feel I’m saying the same thing every week.”

He’d be lucky

Going on Rangers’ current form, Van Bronckhorst would be lucky to even make it through the World Cup break.

Just months after the miraculous Europa League run, Gers look flat and uninterested under Van Bronckhorst and his tactical decisions and lineups have left much to be desired.

The Champions League campaign was always going to be tough, but the repetitive thrashings and error-strewn performances weren’t acceptable.

Admittedly the board failed Van Bronckhorst in the summer by not following up the Europa League final with a window of investment, but there are no excuses for some of the league results this season.

The loss to St Johnstone was the final straw for many Rangers fans, and any more dropped points could see Rangers quickly fall out of contention for the league title. It’s becoming increasingly clear that the only way to salvage the season is a change in management, and it’d be better to make the call before the World Cup break.
