Footage shows Rangers fans angrily confronting James Tavernier after St Johnstone loss

Rangers fans waited behind at McDiarmid Park after the 2-1 loss to St Johnstone, and James Tavernier was confronted by a group of supporters.

Rangers fell seven points behind rivals Celtic in the title race after a hugely disappointing 2-1 loss to St Johnstone on Sunday afternoon.

Tavernier scored late on, but it wasn’t enough to rescue a point for Gers and fans were understandably fuming with the team’s performance.

Footage emerged on Twitter of Rangers fans at McDiarmid Park speaking to Tavernier as he exited the ground.

Fans can be heard venting their frustration at the players not coming over to applaud the travelling support.

Frustration is understandable

Who can blame Rangers fans for being furious after Sunday’s showing. Yet again, Gers dominated the ball but often looked toothless in the final third.

The defence continued to look fragile and low on confidence and frankly, St Johnstone deserved the lead after making Rangers pay for their wastefulness in possession.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst is now under huge pressure at Ibrox and after a dismal Champions League campaign, it’s vital that he keeps within touching distance of Celtic in the title race.

The fact that he didn’t come to applaud fans at the full-time whistle is inexcusable and Tavernier also deserves criticism as the captain of the side.

After such a poor performance, both the manager and captain need to take responsibility but both shied away after the defeat and retreated to the dressing room.

Fan unrest is only going to grow if the players and manager force distance between the supporters and the squad. A convincing victory is needed against Hearts on Wednesday otherwise Van Bronckhorst may be shown the exit.
