‘I would be astounded’ – Ally McCoist shares claim on Rangers current financial situation

Ally McCoist believes the lack of investment at Rangers is due to the club still owing money to certain individuals who are “within their rights” to demand it back.

The Gers have received substantial transfer fees for Calvin Bassey, Nathan Patterson and Joe Aribo in recent years, yet there has been significantly less invested back into the squad.

McCoist feels the transfer fees were most likely used to pay off debts but did admit that Rangers are probably in a very good place financially.

“A long time ago I was on the inside looking out but now I am on the outside looking in, so I can only guess. It’s a reasonable guess, but people are due money back, and they’re well within their rights to do that,” said McCoist (Sky Sports 11:23, 6 November).

“I would be astounded if the finances aren’t in a very good place and I can understand the supporters’ concern with some of that money not being put back into the club.”

Frustration

There are a lot of areas of the club that are currently causing plenty of angst amongst the Ibrox faithful. The performances on the pitch are ultimately going to take the brunt of it, but the lack of investment in the summer is also taking a serious toll. If Giovanni van Bronckhorst was backed to the hilt and performances were the same, then it would all rest on his shoulders.

A change in the dugout is probably needed to avoid this season from fizzling out into nothingness. These players are devoid of quality, commitment and confidence, so it will be a huge task to get them all pushing in the right direction. What is also concerning is that if a new manager is required, the same board that got the summer window miserably wrong will be the ones conducting the search.

The latest defeat to St Johnstone clearly demonstrated that the players have given up under van Bronckhorst. Furthermore, it means the Gers will have to put together an incredible run to realistically catch Celtic, including beating The Hoops in their remaining meetings in the 2022/23 campaign.
