Pundit shares Steven Davis verdict and laments ‘vast amount’ of untouched money at Rangers

Alan Rough believes Steven Davis would be nowhere near starting for Rangers if quality players had been added during the summer at Ibrox.

The 37-year-old has played 15 times already in the 2022/23 season after signing a one-year contract extension with the club in the summer.

Rough has suggested the Ibrox hierarchy should have used the “vast amount” of money they received from the sales of Calvin Bassey and Joe Aribo to really improve their midfield options.

Rangers

Talking on the PLZ Football Show (3 November, 21:38), Rough said: “I thought the success of Rangers in Europe was the midfield, with Aribo and Kamara. All of a sudden they’re not there anymore and instead of bringing in quality like that, they’re left with Scott Arfield and Davis.

“I think Davis would be nowhere near that midfield if Rangers went out and bought quality for the ones that they’ve lost. I am not knocking Davis, he’s a quality player, there’s no doubt about that. What I am saying is that with Rangers losing the quality they had, they should’ve invested in equal quality.

“Rangers should have used the vast amount of money they had coming in to buy some quality players.”

More investment

Rough is right in his assessment. More should have been spent in the summer and unless that money is invested in the upcoming windows, serious questions should be asked of the board at Ibrox. The sum the club received for Bassey could well have seen Rangers upgrade pretty much every single position.

Eintracht Frankfurt narrowly beat the Gers in the final of the Europa League and have kicked on since to cement themselves in the upper echelons of the Bundesliga. Something similar should have happened at Ibrox. The European run should have seen Rangers become Scotland’s dominant force once again and also compete in the Champions League.

However, without significant investment, that is nigh on impossible. The next two transfer windows will be telling for Light Blues fans. The club have money from this season’s Champions League campaign and previous sales sat ready to be invested. If it remains untouched then the Ibrox faithful are right to be frustrated.

In other Rangers news, a “crazy situation” has emerged at Ibrox that’s led to this star player being “gone” from the club.
