Ben Davies among five defenders likely out for Rangers SPFL clash vs St Johnstone

Rangers are likely to be without five first-team defenders for the SPFL clash with St Johnstone on Sunday, while Kemar Roofe and Ryan Jack are out too says Giovani van Bronckhorst.

The Gers were flattened in midweek by Ajax in the Champions League as they made it six defeats from six, but will be looking to get back to good form domestically following their 4-1 win over Aberdeen last weekend.

But they’ll need to do it with the same injury problems they’ve been facing in recent weeks with all of Connor Goldson, John Souttar, Filip Helander and Ridvan Yilmaz missing as defensive options. Ben Davies is a major doubt, but will train on Saturday before a decision is made, says the boss (4 November).

Ryan Jack and Kemar Roofe are also unavailable for the game, but SPFL player of the month Antonio Colak looks set to continue in attack after the manager admitted he has scored lots of important goals this season.

That means James Sands is likely to continue at centre-back alongside Leon King, while Glen Kamara could come back into the side after making his return in midweek against Ajax after a spell out with injury.

Troubles

This defensive injury crisis is constantly getting worse and with performances like the one in midweek it’s hard not to believe that we’re vulnerable right now.

Having so many injuries in one area of the field is always problematic but in defence when you play such an attack-minded style is even worse.

We’re currently down to the bare bones and will have to put St Johnstone to the sword to avoid any hiccups, especially away from home against a side who will set up to defend and catch us on the counter.

The midfield situation is beginning to look a bit stronger now too with Kamara back and Lundstram available after his European suspension, but there is surely concerns over Jack with his contract set to expire in the summer too.

In attack there are options aplenty and Van Bronckhorst must make the right decisions to get the best out of his team to ensure the gap behind Celtic is as closed as possible.
