John Hartson has ‘no doubt’ on Alfredo Morelos future as Rangers exit verdict revealed

John Hartson has “no doubt” that Alfredo Morelos will leave Rangers when his contract comes to its conclusion in the summer of 2023.

The Colombian has struggled for form of late and has had to play second fiddle to Antonio Colak at times this season at Ibrox.

After two guilt edge misses in Europe over the past couple of weeks, Hartson cannot see the striker having a long-term future at the club.

Talking on the Go Radio Football Podcast [2 November, 55:26], he said: “Morelos in the period that he has been at Rangers, he’s been the number one striker. Gerrard fancied him and played him all the time. He’s got over 100 goals. Give him credit for that.

“He’s unpredictable but now when you see another striker coming in, he plays now in fits and starts. He wants to be No.1 It’s affecting him. It’s affecting his confidence.

“His contract is up at the end of the season and there is no doubt for me he will leave because he’s not playing regularly at this moment in time.”

Looking inevitable

It’s a really disappointing way for Morelos’ time at Ibrox to come to an end with the 26-year-old looking like a shadow of the player he once was. In previous seasons the striker has been instinctive in front of goal and has been the talisman for the Light Blues.

The addition of Colak and the contract situation are having a huge impact on his current performance. It’s hard to envisage Morelos having many suitors when his contract does expire in the summer because right now his performance levels aren’t up to Scottish Premiership levels, let alone elsewhere in Europe.

If he put his contract wrangling to bed and focuses on improving his current levels, there is definitely a future for him at Ibrox. Gers fans are desperate for the blood and thunder version of the striker to return and propel them towards a Scottish Premiership title challenge.

It seems unlikely, but it would be a huge help for everybody at the club if he put his contract issues to one side. If Rangers receive a January bid for the striker, it would not be a shock to see them accept.

In other Rangers news, a “crazy situation” has emerged at Ibrox that’s led to this star player being “gone” from the club.
