‘Absurd’ Rangers and Celtic financial verdict shared by newspaper journalist after Champions League developments
Rangers and Celtic are perfect examples of the financial imbalances in the world of football, according to Mirror journalist Colin Millar.
The Old Firm sides are easily the wealthiest, strongest and best teams in Scottish football but their performances in the Champions League group stages this season just shows how far they are behind Europe’s elite.
Rangers won the unwanted record of the worst-ever group stage performance with their 3-1 loss to Ajax on Tuesday while Celtic also finished bottom of their group in a campaign that ended with a defeat to Real Madrid on Wednesday.

“Rangers and Celtic this season emphasising the absurd financial imbalances in football,” Millar wrote via his personal Twitter account on Wednesday (2 November).
“Far, far too rich to have any meaningful competition domestically.
“Far, far too poor to have any meaningful competition against top European teams.”
Where to go from here?
Rangers had a tough group and while we didn’t expect anything other than a bottom-place finish in all seriousness, we didn’t expect to finish bottom so badly.
Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men seemed to give up when the draw was made.
Liverpool, Napoli and Ajax – three of the best of England, Italy and the Netherlands.
Celtic’s group had Real Madrid, who are one of the favourites to win the Champions League again this season, but RB Leipzig and Shakhtar Donetsk are hardly comparable to the sides the Gers faced.
Especially when we beat Leipzig in the Europa League knock-outs last season.
But still, Rangers and Celtic are miles ahead in Scotland.
Always have been and always will be.
In Europe, it’s been a slow and steady decline up until last season for Rangers, who reached the Europa League final.
That, however, is now very clearly a one-off and when it comes to mixing with the actual big boys on a regular basis and now in knock-out competition, we’re small fry.
In other Rangers news, a “crazy situation” has emerged at Ibrox that’s led to this star player being “gone” from the club.
