Daily Record writers predict result of Rangers vs Ajax in UEFA Champions League showdown

Rangers are set to avoid a complete failure of a Champions League season by getting a positive result against Ajax according to the Daily Record writers.

The Gers have lost five out of five group stage games so far and been handily beaten each time, with a 2-1 loss at Anfield the closest they’ve come to picking up a point.

Their previous two home games ended in a 3-0 defeat to Napoli and a 7-1 loss to Liverpool, but the Daily Record are backing them to get a positive result in the final game to avoid a whitewashing and an infamous group stage.

Rangers

Michael Gannon believes Rangers could pick up a 2-1 win with a morale-boosting victory because the Amsterdam club only need to avoid a 5-0 defeat to get into the Europa League.

Scott Burns (1-1), Craig Swan (2-2), Fraser Wilson (2-2), Gordon Parks (1-1) and Liam Bryce (1-1) all predict the points to be shared in the game, while stunningly nobody predicted an Ajax victory.

Wishful

It would be great for morale and to avoid the unwanted record if Rangers can pick up a point or more from the game on Tuesday night, but it seems unlikely.

There are 10 first-team players out injured, while the back-four is down it’s bare bones and the midfield is going to be made up of players who are not fully fit or match fit.

In attack the players are largely out of form, and after a tough game at the weekend saw them beat Aberdeen, Ajax were relaxing at home having been given the weekend off by the Dutch league.

Add to all of that the fact that Giovanni van Bronckhorst has essentially admitted that he doesn’t think this team is good enough to compete at this level, a defeat is more than likely.

A good performance will be a great boost too, but a result would be a huge bonus and the fans will be delighted if these writers are right.
