Aberdeen banner displayed v Rangers to be investigated by police

The police have launched an investigation into Aberdeen fans after they displayed a controversial banner during their game away at Rangers.

The Light Blues surged to a 4-1 victory against the Dons thanks to goals from Antonio Colak, John Lundstram, James Tavernier and Alfredo Morelos after Connor Barron had given the visitors the lead.

The banner in question had an unpleasant message displayed on it directed at Rangers as a football club and the police now say that an investigation has been opened into the incident.

Officers were made aware of a report of a banner held up at a Rangers v Aberdeen football match around 4:15pm on Saturday, October 29,” a police spokesperson said, as quoted by the Press and Journal. “Inquiries are ongoing.”

Grow up

It is just typical of football hooligan-type supporters to cause trouble like this and it is a shame to say that it’s no surprise anymore.

Admittedly, there is little jurisdiction to monitor what is displayed on banners and especially if they are hidden within bags by supporters when they enter the stadium.

But this is where security should be asking to see the banner prior to permitting entrance into the stadium so they can avoid such situations in the future.

Fortunately, Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side were not affected by the incident and discontent in the crowd as a result as they brushed Jim Goodwin’s team aside with little effort after they got a kick up the backside by Barron’s strike.

They won’t be remotely bothered by the incident now as they prepare to host Ajax in Glasgow on Tuesday (1 November) in what is their final Champions League game of this season.

In other Rangers news, the Old Firm duo could potentially be invited into a very controversial competition after reluctance was shown by Premier League sides.
