Kris Boyd names James Tavernier, John Lundstram and Fashion Sakala in SPFL team of the week after Rangers win v Aberdeen

Kris Boyd has named three Rangers players in his SPFL team of the week after the win over Aberdeen, as well as naming Giovanni van Bronckhorst as his manager of the week.

The Gers rebounded from their awful 3-0 thrashing at the hands of Napoli in the UEFA Champions League in midweek by coming from behind and scoring four in a 4-1 win over Aberdeen on Saturday afternoon.

Despite four different goalscorers in the game, only two of them made it into Boyd’s team of the week for The Sun, while Fashion Sakala also joined John Lundstram and James Tavernier in his side.

Sakala got a rare start on the right wing and impressed with his direct running and energy, while Lundstram continued his excellent form with another goal.

Skipper Tavernier made it 200 goal contributions for the club in 389 appearances with his goal, while he also missed a penalty as Rangers maintained the four point gap between themselves and Celtic at the top of the table.

Excellent

The performance against Aberdeen was exactly what fans have been demanding for weeks and is hopefully the standard setter for the coming weeks.

There isn’t long before the team breaks up for the World Cup, but after a shoddy Champions League campaign and falling behind Celtic in the title race they will be keen to end this period as well as possible before resetting in November and December.

Rangers

Once they return they will need to hit the ground running, but it’s good for Van Bronckhorst that he has got members of the squad that aren’t regulars firing too.

It’s also a big credit to him that he’s managed to drum up a performance like that when his job has come under such severe pressure in recent weeks, and Boyd was right to recognise that.

All in all a good weekend for Rangers, and hopefully we can carry that over for the big Champions League clash with Ajax at Ibrox on Tuesday night.
