Kenny Dalglish reacts to Steven Gerrard links to Rangers manager job

Kenny Dalglish believes Steven Gerrard wouldn’t return to Rangers after recently being sacked by Aston Villa after a poor run of results.

The Gers’ win over Aberdeen has eased the pressure slightly on Giovanni van Bronckhorst, with the Light Blues finally putting in an impressive performance.

Despite the win, there are still question marks over his future and Dalglish has spoken out about Gerrard potentially returning to Ibrox.

“The Rangers supporters have been critical of Giovanni van Bronckhorst and the players in recent weeks,” he said (Sunday Post column, 30 October).

“They found the 4-0 defeat away to Ajax on the opening night and the 7-1 home defeat to Liverpool totally unacceptable. This has led to some fans calling for Giovanni to be replaced.

“It’s even been suggested that some Bluenoses would like to see Steven Gerrard back in charge after he and Aston Villa parted company.

“That scenario is completely hypothetical, and only Steven would know what he would do if he was ever offered another chance on Glasgow’s south side. My personal view is that he wouldn’t go back to Ibrox.”

He’s got time

The 4-1 win over Aberdeen has certainly earnt van Bronckhorst a stay of execution after coming under fire in recent weeks. Not being thumped by Napoli and then putting in an impressive domestic display is exactly what the Dutchman would’ve been looking for.

Rangers have one more European tie to overcome as Ajax make the trip to Ibrox on Tuesday (1 November), with there still being the unlikely scenario of the Gers being able to snatch third place off of the Eredivisie side. Once their European tour is over, the Light Blues simply have to build on their performance against Aberdeen.

Despite their poor form, they still sit within touching distance of Celtic at the top of the Premiership table. A perfect run-up until the Gers face Celtic at the start of January is probably a must.

Van Bronckhorst has saved himself from the brink, and it’s now time for his side to show some much-needed consistency.
