BBC Sportscene baffled by Anthony Stewart incident as footage emerges from Rangers 4-1 win v Aberdeen

Richard Foster was baffled by Anthony Stewart’s defending when Rangers scored their opening goal of the 4-1 win over Aberdeen at Ibrox on Saturday.

Malik Tillman’s pass to Colak, who was near the penalty spot, could have been intercepted by Aberdeen defender Stewart but he weirdly slid past the ball and allowed it to find the Croatian goal machine.

After watching footage of the goal on BBC Sportscene, ex-Rangers player Foster raged at how bad Stewart’s defending was.

Speaking on BBC Sportscene on Saturday (29 October, 14m01s), Foster said: “I think there were just too many gaps [in the Aberdeen defence].

“If you look here, [Liam] Scales goes out too early. You’ve got to let the ball go to Sakala, you can’t let the ball go inside you there.

“It does and it’s a great run from Tillman.

“Stewart doesn’t cover himself in glory there. I don’t know what he’s trying to do. He actually dives past the ball.”

Shocking defending

We can sit here and slam Aberdeen for their shocking defending all day but ultimately, Rangers attacked brilliantly and deserved each and every goal they scored.

We should’ve even got more but a 4-1 win against the fourth-placed Dons was enough to relieve some of the pressure off manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

The Dutchman has had a tough start to the season.

Although we’ve won all but three Scottish Premiership matches this season and are in the Premier Sports Cup semi-finals, a lot of our performances have been disappointing.

And then there are the defeats.

The way we lost to Celtic and Liverpool this season is inexcusable and if van Bronckhorst hadn’t have won silverware last season or reached the Europa League final, he’d have been gone.

But he’s done a lot to keep himself in the job for a bit longer with this win over Aberdeen and a positive result against Ajax on Tuesday could see him stay in the job until at least the next Old FIrm.

In other Rangers news, Chris Sutton has leapt to the Gers’ defence on Twitter after a bizarre rant by a talkSPORT host.
