Alfredo Morelos is ‘gone’ from Rangers as ‘crazy situation’ at Ibrox revealed

Alfredo Morelos is “gone” from Rangers with no hope of him signing a new contract at Ibrox, according to Scottish Mail on Sunday columnist Gary Keown.

Morelos, 26, scored his third goal of the season in the 4-1 win over Aberdeen on Saturday (29 October) but he’s failed to start a single Scottish Premiership game this season as his contract edges closer to expiring.

The Colombian will be available for clubs to sign him on a pre-contract basis in January while Keown doesn’t believe anyone will be in their right mind to actually pay for the troublesome striker.

Writing for the Scottish Mail on Sunday (30 October, page 137), Keown said: “And here we are. In a crazy situation where a player rated at £20m by the Ibrox board two years ago looks likely to walk for nothing in the summer.

“They could push ahead with offering that new idea, but does it make sense when he looks as demotivated as this?

“You could look for a bargain-basement sale in January providing a replacement can be sourced, but who would buy? Morelos has always been a liability.”

Keown added: “Morelos leaving under those circumstances is bad enough. But he’s gone. And he has to go, this walking embodiment of his current club. A spiralling whirl of wrong decisions, wrong attitudes and seeing all sorts of incredible opportunities turn to mush in your hands.”

Idiotic management

Morelos has always been a bull – of a buffalo – in a china shop.

He’s always had the potential to see red, get himself sent off, cause controversy and rub people up the wrong way whether they’re on his side or not.

But he’s a lethal goalscorer and his goal against Aberdeen levelled Mark Hateley’s record as a Rangers player and ranks him joint-30th among the club’s all-time scorers.

Morelos is a modern-day hero at Ibrox.

But the way his time at the club is ending is regrettable.

Morelos should have been sold a season or two ago when his value was a lot higher and when he was playing and scoring regularly in the league and in Europe.

He’s been in great form in numerous Europa League campaigns, fired us to a Scottish Premiership title and left us with some very, very memorable moments.

But he’s outstayed his welcome now and we don’t know if that’s his fault or the club’s.

It’s probably a mixture of both.

Ryan Kent’s stay at Ibrox is headed the same way while there are also other older members of the squad who should have been shown where the exit door was a while back.

Our squad is a complete mess.

If next summer doesn’t go well, we could be trailing in Celtic’s wake for years to come.
