Ally McCoist takes aim at Celtic after talkSPORT host mocks Rangers Champions League record
Rangers suffered a fifth consecutive Champions League defeat on Wednesday night, but Ally McCoist still found pride in lasting longer than Celtic.
Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side remain on zero points in Group A after a 3-0 thrashing in Naples, but Rangers bizarrely can still qualify for the Europa League in their final group game against Ajax.
Alan Brazil pointed out that Rangers are on the brink of owning the worst-ever Champions League record – their -18 goal difference leaves them one shy of Dinamo Zagreb’s -19 record in the 2011/12 season. But McCoist quickly diverted attention towards Celtic’s equally shocking record in Europe.
“Rangers have lost five out of five and conceded 18 more than they have scored. Ally – what do you think of those stats?” asked Brazil on talkSPORT, as quoted by Glasgow Live.
McCoist replied: “That’s poor but the one thing I would say is we still have a chance of qualifying for the Europa League.
“You are out. Out of Europe. We’ve lasted a week longer than you.”
Silver lining
Rangers fans were aware that competing in the Champions League this season would have been a mountainous task, but excitement was still high after Gers qualified for the tournament for the first time in 12 years.
It has obviously ended in heartbreak and disappointment, with Van Bronckhorst’s side scoring just one goal while consistently being on the end of humiliating scorelines.

But the one silver lining in the competition? Rangers still managed to outlast Celtic.
Rangers’ bitter rivals sit bottom of Group F – which is a considerably easier pool of teams compared to Rangers – and already find themselves out of Europe after picking up just two points.
There would be no bigger celebration in Glasgow than if Rangers somehow qualified for the Europa League with a huge win against Ajax next week. Gers would have to win by five clear goals to topple Ajax in the head-to-head record.
It’d take a freakishly good performance to beat the Dutch champions that heavily at Ibrox, but it’s still a great opportunity for the club to pick up their first Champions League points.
