Gabriel Agbonlahor: Rangers could sack Giovanni Van Bronckhorst if they lose heavily to Napoli
Rangers could sack Giovanni van Bronckhorst if they suffer another heavy defeat to Napoli on Wednesday night, according to Gabriel Agbonlahor.
The Gers were thumped in all four Champions League games so far this season and have already been eliminated from the tournament with two games to spare.
The nature of those defeats has seen the manager come under pressure at Ibrox, and the former Aston Villa striker told talkSPORT [26 October] that another one in Naples against the dangerous Serie A side could see him out of a job.
“I think if Rangers can get out of there with like a 3-1 (defeat) then they’d be happy,” he said. “I’m hoping.
“But I’m thinking with a couple of games left in the Champions League, Rangers are going to want to show something.
“With the pressure the manager Van Bronckhorst is under, another heavy defeat against Napoli could send him into getting sacked. So I’m going to go 3-1 to Napoli, but Rangers will put up a fight.”
Fight
Nobody is expecting the team to go to Napoli and get a win considering the form of both clubs right now and the fact that there will be minimal fans in the ground from Glasgow.
However, if this group of players have got anything about them then they’ll want to fight for this manager knowing the current situation and knowing there is an unwanted record at stake.
Another defeat would almost guarantee that Rangers finish the group stages with the worst record ever from a six game group, with just one goal scored and a goal difference that would be edging close to -20.
Qualification is no longer up for grabs to the knockout rounds, but if they can sneak a result tonight and shock the world then there is still a great possibility that they are able to sneak into the Europa League in the new year by finishing third.
There is still plenty to play for and these players need to prove they’re worthy of playing at the top level, so it’s about time they showed it.
