Aberdeen legend Willie Miller wants to play Rangers twice now with club there to be exploited

Willie Miller would like Aberdeen to be able to play the Premier Sports Cup semi-final against Rangers now because of their “fragility” which he wants “exploited”.

The Dons come to Ibrox on Saturday (29 October) with Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side in poor form and coming off a daunting trip to Napoli on Wednesday night (26 October) as pressure mounts on the manager and club.

Having laboured to overcome Championship Dundee in the League Cup the Gers also face Aberdeen in the semis of that competition in the new year and Miller has lamented the fact that game can’t be played now as well because of the opportunity provided by the current struggles.

Rangers

Writing in the Aberdeen Evening Express on Tuesday (25 October) he said: “This is the right time to face a Rangers side who are nowhere near their best.

“The only downside is that the Premier Sports Cup semi-final against Rangers at Hampden is not until January 16.

“Rangers have strength in depth, but there seems to be something off just now within that club which needs to be exploited.

“Aberdeen and manager Jim Goodwin are more than capable of capitalising on where Rangers find themselves at the moment.”

Response

The Light Blues still haven’t mustered much of a response to the dismal 7-1 thrashing at the hands of Liverpool in the Champions League on 12 October.

Since then they are unbeaten in three but the trio of games consist of an unconvincing win over Motherwell, an even more unconvincing one in the cup that saw them booed off by the fans, and then a damaging draw with Livingston at the weekend.

Teams shouldn’t be looking forward to coming to Ibrox but with the form the side is in currently that is the case, and barring a major turn up in Italy the players could be further damaged by another heavy European defeat there.

Rangers

Miller’s sentiment isn’t far off the dismissive ‘Can we play you every week?’ chant directed at teams from the opposition supporters in the middle of a heavy defeat.

That the Rangers season has reached that point and it’s not yet even November isn’t a positive sign for van Bronckhorst’s reign, and unless he can inspire his players to improve their performances and results soon it is hard to see where he goes from here.

The players are getting booed off the pitch by their own fans after every half at the moment and that can’t go on for much longer before there is little left to play for this season.

In other Rangers news, Ally McCoist is annoyed that he has been forced to agree with Jason Cundy’s latest attempt to get a reaction out of Scottish fans.
