Michael Stewart and Shelley Kerr wowed by John Lundstram despite Rangers draw with Livingston

Shelley Kerr and Michael Stewart were both highly impressed by John Lundstram’s volleyed strike for Rangers in the draw with Livingstone at Ibrox.

The English midfielder smashed home an equaliser from a Ryan Kent chipped cut back in the 91st minute as the home side struggled to break down the 10 man visitors, who had lead since the 4th minute through Joel Nouble.

Lundstram would still end the game devastated however, when he could only head a glorious opportunity to snatch the win off target in the 97th minute, on a day which heightened the pressure on manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst as his side did so little a mammoth 73 crosses into the box.

Speaking live on BBC Sportscene on Saturday night (22 October, 8.04pm) Kerr said of the late equaliser: “It was one of the few occasions in the game that they actually had a cut back.

“It’s a brilliant finish, but Rangers didn’t do that enough, they had a lot of crosses in the game but you have to do something different. It’s Ryan Kent that picks Lundstram out on the edge of the area and it’s a wonderful finish.”

Stewart agreed, adding: “It’s a great strike isn’t it? It’s a real good strike.”

It might be somewhat of a collector’s item for a Light Blues man to receive genuine praise from Stewart but it was a lovely finish hammered into the top corner dramatically as the game ticked past 90.

It is therefore a shame for both Lundstram and the supporters that it had to be in such circumstances, as half the stands had already emptied amid another depressing outing this season.

After being booed off when labouring to a 1-0 win over Dundee in the League Cup on Wednesday (19 October) the Gers went one worse to be held at home and were booed off at the end of each half.

The later chance that the same player missed was arguably the easier of the two, and the fact that he didn’t hit the target meant it was two crucial points dropped in the title race as Celtic moved four ahead.

And with Napoli next up in the Champions League in Italy it could get ugly, with the Serie A side on a 10 game winning streak in all competitions, racking up a total of 32 goals in that time ahead of their Sunday (23 October) meeting with Roma.

Rangers have been roundly beaten in all four European games so far, and if they are now struggling or even failing to win games in domestic action it isn’t a positive sign at all.

If they are on the end of another hammering in midweek then the questions will become deafening about how long this can go on before a change is made.

In other Rangers news, Chris Sutton was filled with jokes at the club’s expense as an excruciating chance went begging.
