Kenny Miller outlines how Giovanni van Bronckhorst ‘can survive’ at Rangers

Giovanni van Bronckhorst is under serious pressure at Ibrox but Kenny Miller believes the Dutchman can save his Rangers job in the next five games.

Following a disappointing 1-1 draw with Livingston on Saturday, pressure around Van Bronckhorst’s job has never been higher.

Rangers have endured a dismal Champions League campaign and now sit four points behind rivals Celtic in the Premiership. However, Miller believes there is an escape route for Van Bronckhorst.

Rangers Giovanni van Bronckhorst

“I feel everybody involved at Rangers probably can’t wait to see the back of the Champions League campaign,” Miller told BBC Sportsound, as quoted by Glasgow Live.

“None more than Gio. He’s got two games to go and he needs to find a way.

“He’s not drilled into one way of playing but he needs to find a way to be competitive. What I would say is that playing like this, Rangers do not win the league.

“That’s the long and short of it. He can survive. He needs to have an improved performance in the Champions League to round that off and he probably needs maximum points [in the Premiership].”

Hopeful

Rangers looked blunt, hopeless and lost for much of the match against Livingston. To then suggest that Gers can go and win all four of their next Premiership games is extremely ambitious.

Especially as the next four is made up of Aberdeen, St Johnstone, Hearts and St Mirren. Playing third and fourth-placed in the league spells danger for Van Bronckhorst, and Rangers could easily find themselves out of the Championship race by the time the World Cup comes around.

Rangers

But not only does Miller want to see a 100 per cent record in the Premiership, the former Rangers and Celtic player also wants to see the team compete in the Champions League.

Just to put that into perspective, Rangers still have to travel to Napoli away. The Italian outfit boast a 100% record in the competition so far and have scored 17 goals while only conceding four.

After taking a huge confidence knock during the Liverpool defeat, the chances of Rangers even competing in Naples is minuscule.

So frankly, if Van Bronckhorst does navigate the side through this tough patch by winning all of the remaining Premiership games before the World cup and competing in the Champions League – then absolutely he deserves to stay
