Rangers manager situation sparks Chris Sutton and Ally McCoist debate
Giovanni van Bronckhorst is far from safe as the Rangers manager but Ally McCoist has insisted he does not want him to be sacked.
An Ibrox icon in his own right, McCoist was being typically nudged by Celtic hero Chris Sutton on BT Sport’s Scottish Football Extra as the Hoops fan suggested Steven Gerrard could return.
The former Rangers manager was sacked by Aston Villa on Thursday (20 October) after the Villans were comfortably beaten 3-0 by Fulham in the Premier League.
“Here’s one Ally, Steven Gerrard has now been sacked by Aston Villa, would you take Steven Gerrard Back?” Sutton asked.
“No, I don’t want to replace the manager, Chris, is the answer to that question,” McCoist said in response.
Sutton snapped back quickly, saying: “You’re not happy with the brand of football though, you just said.”
“I said I wasn’t enjoying at this particular time,” McCoist replied. “That’s what I said and is very fair and correct. I’m sure you will agree that Rangers are far capable of playing better football than we are seeing at this moment in time.”
Backwards step
The moment Gerrard decided to leave Rangers to join Villa, that era of the football club was well and truly over and there is no benefit to be gained by reopening that chapter.

van Bronckhorst has still got plenty of opportunities to turn things around in Glasgow as the Light Blues are only two points behind Ange Postecoglu’s Celtic in the Premiership while being far from their best all season.
The Dutchman has seemingly managed to make his team one of those that can still win on their off days which is what makes a truly great team.
This current crop of players is far from that right now but the right morals and attitudes are in place for it to happen soon as long as the board show faith in their former player at the helm.
It was only a few months ago he led the club to a European final and that cannot be forgotten just because there is a small blip in performances.
In other Rangers news, there has already been contact between van Brnockhorst and Gerrard after the latter lost his job at Villa Park.
