Rangers: Giovanni van Bronckhorst sends Steven Gerrard message after Aston Villa sacking
Former Rangers manager Steven Gerrard was sacked by Aston Villa on Thursday (20 October) and Giovanni van Bronckhorst has been in touch.
The Dutchman, who took Gerrard’s job at Ibrox when he left for the Premier League, sent the former England captain a text following the news that broke after his Villa side were beaten 3-0 by Fulham at Craven Cottage.
van Bronckhorst faced the media on Friday (21 October) for the first time since the news of his colleague’s sacking and admitted that he had been in touch swiftly after he heard.
“Gio says he sent Steven Gerrard a message following his sacking from Aston Villa,” Rangers Review journalist Derek Clark said via his personal Twitter account.
Rangers host Livingston on Saturday (22 October) looking to keep up with Premiership leaders Celtic who currently hold a two-point advantage in the race for the title.
Return?
van Bronckhorst may have been courteous in sending a message to Gerrard now but he knows that his position at Ibrox is under pressure and won’t want the fan favourite returning to spoil his fun.
With the Liverpool icon now freely available for any team who wants to try and bring him to their club, Ross Wilson and company in the Rangers board room might well consider whether van Bronckhorst will keep his job.

No suitable replacements may have kept him safe from the sack for longer than expected but that is not the case anymore as many teams pull the trigger to get the best of ‘new manager bounce’ prior to the World Cup.
It might seem odd to suggest a manager who has their team second in the league is close to the sack but for Rangers, second is not good enough domestically and the farcical Champions League form is not helping either.
In other Rangers news, the Light Blues have reportedly put a price tag on this young charger as European clubs take an interest.
