Andy Walker poses Steven Gerrard to Rangers question after Aston Villa sacking

Steven Gerrard was sacked by Aston Villa on Thursday night, and former Celtic man Andy Walker has questioned whether he’d return to Rangers.

Gerrard’s time at Aston Villa ended just 11 months after he upped and left Rangers following a league-winning season in Glasgow.

The 42-year-old now finds himself out of a job again and with Giovanni van Bronckhorst under mounting pressure of his own at Ibrox, Walker wonders whether Gerrard would ever make a comeback at Rangers.

Rangers

“There is something not quite right at Rangers. They beat Dundee United 2-1 and the fans weren’t happy. The Champions League embarrassment was painful, and when you are playing Dundee at home you are allowing for a number of changes,” Walker told the The Go Radio Football Show, as quoted by the Daily Record.

“Getting booed off after a victory doesn’t bode well.

“I still think he [Gerrard] has another job in him, for what he did at Rangers. He wouldn’t come back to Rangers though, would he?”

Comeback on the cards?

Gerrard was great for Rangers and will always be remembered for leading the side to that historic title win.

However, it’d be tough for a lot of the Gers fanbase to accept the former Liverpool star back after how he departed the club.

It always seemed inevitable that Gerrard was going to leave for a Premier League job, but his departure still stung and left the club desperately searching for a successor.

Michael Beale, who was Gerrard’s assistant at Ibrox, recently knocked back suggestions of replacing Van Bronckhorst [Daily Record], but the in-demand QPR boss still remains a candidate should Rangers want a new man in the hot seat.

And frankly, Beale would likely be more accepted at Ibrox than Gerrard. His work on the training ground didn’t go unnoticed and he deserves a shot at managing the first team on his own.

So while Gerrard is certainly etched into Rangers history for his job in Glasgow, a homecoming from the recently-sacked Villa boss would be a huge surprise.
