Rangers must rip up Josh McPake contract after latest failure away from Ibrox

Rangers have loaned a number of players out over the years with varying levels of success but there is one player who they must now give up on.

Josh McPake has managed to rack up six loan spells away from Ibrox before reaching his 22nd birthday – that’s some stunt by the young midfielder. Harrogate, Dundee, Morecambe, Tranmere, Greenock Morton and now Queen’s Park have all had the pleasure of his services over the past three years.

The 21-year-old is contracted to the Gers until the summer of 2024, but Rangers should probably take the hint and look to get the misfiring winger off of their books.

Before the summer window opened, Rangers were considering terminating his contract (Daily Record, 3 May) and they should well have after a succession of disappointing loans. Ten goal contributions across 71 games for six different clubs is simply not good enough.

What makes it worse, is that he isn’t improving, with the Rangers loanee failing to register a goal or an assist in his latest loan spell at Queen’s Park. Quite frankly, it’s remarkable they even took a punt on him.

If McPake was going to make an impact for the Gers it would’ve happened by now, with the academy product now past his pivotal developmental years. He’s a player that is well below the level required to be involved in Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s plans.

The Gers do need to avoid holding onto underperforming youngsters for too long. It feels as if a lot of Scotland’s lower leagues are filled to the brim with Ibrox prospects.

Decisions potentially need to be made earlier, as opposed to letting them go on a string of loans away from Ibrox with there being no intention of them being considered for the first team.

In other Rangers news, this Gers player “knows he’s done” after BBC Sportscene shared footage of him.
