John Lundstram: ‘Daunting’ Rangers fans ‘can take some people under’

John Lundstram has reflected on his rocky start at Ibrox and details how “demanding” Rangers fans can affect players negatively.

Lundstram signed for Rangers back in 2021 when Steven Gerrard brought the former Sheffield United man to Glasgow in an attempt to bolster the team’s midfield options.

However, the Liverpool-born maestro struggled at first and felt the wrath of Rangers fans at Ibrox during his first few months at the club.

Speaking to UFC fighter Paddy Pimblett on his Chattin Pony podcast, Lundstram said: “When I first came, I was set back by how big the fanbase was, but I think I’ve grown into it now, whereas at the start, I was a bit taken aback and the pressure was a bit for much for me.

“If you are a weak individual, the fanbase, when they do turn against you it can take some people under.

“Good players can come to Rangers and not play as well as what they think they can because the fanbase is so demanding.

“But that is also what wins us games as well.”

High standards

Rangers didn’t manage to fight their way back to the Premiership by accepting mediocrity and low standards.

The Ibrox faithful know what is expected of Rangers players, and will back every single person wearing the badge provided they give the club 100 per cent effort – Lundstram learned this over time.

Lundstram obviously endured a rocky patch at the start of his Gers career, but he’s come back and been accepted by the fans for his work rate and desire to turn things around. Now, he’s a regular in Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side and is roared on weekly by the fans.

His redemption arc should prove to all Rangers players that the supporters at Ibrox will always rally behind them provided they devote themselves to the club.

Rangers fans are feisty and will let their opinions be known, but they’re also the most loyal supporters across the country and will back their team all the way.
