Rangers gave Robby McCrorie 10-year plan from moment he joined academy

Robby McCrorie was given a 10-year plan when he joined Rangers but his window to become the starter may have shut, according to The Athletic.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst has almost exclusively used just Allan McGregor, 41, and Jon McLaughlin, 34, during his time at Ibrox and therefore left Robby McCrorie out in the cold.

The 24-year-old joined the club in 2013 as a very young teenager with hopes of eventually becoming the club’s first-choice goalkeeper but those hopes are slowly diminishing.

“This is a goalkeeper who was given a 10-year plan while still in the academy and given another five-to-six-year route to the gloves before he started being sent on loan to gain experience,” The Athletic’s Jordan Campbell said.

“There will be some people who think his window to become the heir to McGregor has already shut. If the club believed he is the answer, would he not be playing already?

“If McGregor’s time as No 1 was no longer guaranteed, then why did Rangers turn to McLaughlin, who was signed by Gerrard two years ago as a No 2?”

Play or leave

At this stage in his career, McCrorie cannot afford to sit around as any club’s third choice as he sees the years tick by with ever-growing consistency.

Rangers

He should already be the number one somewhere so Rangers now have a conundrum as to whether they finally give him the prolonged chance he needs or they sell him for his own good.

McGregor will surely be retiring soon, maybe at the end of the season, to open one spot while McLaughlin is no spring chicken himself and could be another to leave in the coming windows.

If they do both leave soon, then the door may finally be open for the 24-year-old but van Bronckhorst must surely dip into the transfer market for a replacement if he loses two shot-stoppers at once.

It might now be time for McCrorie to show some courage finally and say to his boyhood club that his career matters more than being the last resort at Ibrox.

In other Rangers news, Ianis Hagi has spoken about his injury once again in public and has insisted that he is completely on schedule despite other rumours.
