Daily Record names four English league players who could join Rangers on free transfers in 2023

Ross Wilson could look to use his contacts in Europe and England to bring five free agents to Rangers in the summer of 2023, according to the Daily Record.

The light blues are likely to have a busy summer transfer window with several first-team players out of contract this summer, while they look to push on and become stronger for another year in Europe.

And plans are already in place to scour the free agent market with Andrey Lunyov, Daniel Amartey, Jonny Evans, Todd Cantwell and Oli McBurnie all named as potential options.

According to the Daily Record [19 October], Wilson “retains contacts across Europe” which could see him move for 27 year old Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper Lunyov as a replacement for Allan McGregor and Jon McLaughlin.

He could also look to the Premier League and Leicester in particular, with defensive solutions likely to be a priority considering the injury issues that have stricken them this season. They say Evans is unlikely to have his deal renewed, while Amartey does retain admirers at the club.

Cantwell had a great season in the Premier League but has gone off the boil since Norwich’s relegation in the 2019/20 season and is out of contract this summer. A move to Ibrox could rejuvenate him, with the newspaper suggesting he could be a replacement for Ryan Kent.

In attack Alfredo Morelos’ future is still up in the air with his contract expiring next summer, so they could look to bring in boyhood Rangers fan and Scotland international McBurnie as a replacement after his torrid time in England.

Cheap

There are always bargains to be had in the free agent market, and not scouring it for potential golden deals would be silly.

But if the club are planning to revamp their squad after losing key players from the bargain bin then there should be major questions asked about the people running the club.

There is no way that the club can continue to progress and get stronger by cutting corners, and losing players like Kent and Morelos would be a huge blow.

That would require big money to be spent to replace them adequately and it seems as though the club may look to avoid that, meaning we’re set to go backwards again.

The experience of Evans and talent of Lunyov and Cantwell would be great acquisitions to add to a strong squad, but as straight up replacements it’s not enough and it’s simply begging for the club to struggle if this is the direction for them to take.
