Rangers: Giovanni van Bronckhorst should have resigned post-Liverpool – Hugh Keevins

Rangers are still reeling from their Champions League embarrassment at home to Liverpool and Hugh Keevins thinks action should have been taken.

The Light Blues were pumped 7-1 by the Premier League giants at Ibrox which then heaped pressure on manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst with their domestic form also not as good as it could be.

Keevins, a pundit for the Daily Record, thinks the former Dutch international should be handed his notice in at Auchenhowie the following morning.

“Giovanni van Bronckhorst should have gone home on Wednesday night, slept on the defeat from Liverpool at Ibrox then tendered his resignation on Thursday morning,” he said.

“He is a good and decent man but the Dutchman’s moral authority to be Rangers’ manager was, to my way of thinking, lost on the back of an ignominious performance and 7-1 loss against Liverpool.

“There has been an inglorious succession of low moments for Rangers during the wilderness years created by the mismanagement of the club’s financial affairs.”

Thin ice

One isolated result shouldn’t necessarily determine the fate of a manager when not all of the blame can be placed at his feet, given he is not one of the people tasked with doing to legwork on the pitch.

But the overall Champions League disappointment can’t be ignored for too much longer with a trip to Napoli still to come and the potential to be the worst team in the history of the Champions League group stage still alive.

The only bright moment against Liverpool was Scott Arfield scoring the first goal in four European games to give the Gers an early lead but even he might not remember that after what happened next.

If the trip to Motherwell on Sunday (16 October) does not see a resounding win and totally dominant performance then serious questions will have to be asked as Celtic would then start to pull a gap to the Bears in the Premiership.

In other Rangers news, this young Ibrox ace has not broken into the team yet after joining in the summer and now is being looked at for a January loan move.
