Chris Sutton continues James Tavernier rant after Rangers Champions League exit

Chris Sutton has continued his attack on James Tavernier after his comments made the headlines post the 7-1 Rangers defeat against Liverpool.

With four losses in as many Champions League games, Gers suffered a humiliating exit from Europe despite two games still to play.

Tavernier said that playing in Europe’s top competition was a bonus and that the focus has always been on winning the league and domestic cups.

Via Twitter, Sutton wrote, “If James Tavernier truly believes the Champions League is just a bonus to enter and the domestic competitions are priority for Rangers it’s an awful mindset and approach to take. Imagine if every Scottish team took that approach.”

He then continued in his column, “It was pathetic the way Rangers crumbled in the second half and fans have every right to be angry. No one likes being beaten but there are ways to lose.

“That sure wasn’t one of them, and neither was Ibrox the other night. And what kind of message does it send out talking about it being a bonus just being at that level?”

Weird obsession

Tavernier surely cannot say that everyone inside the dressing room is distraught because nobody expected Rangers to go through the group stages.

This was one of the toughest draws they could’ve asked for and while their performances were massively underwhelming, the results do not raise too many surprises.

People often criticise players for being media trained but here Tavernier is freely expressing his and possibly the entire team’s views on the Champions League.

Their plans from the start were to go out and give teams a fight and see whatever happens and we do not think Giovanni van Bronckhorst was actually told to get the club to the Round of 16.

Sutton is weirdly obsessed with him as he went on BT Sport on Friday night as well to criticise Tavernier’s mentality.

We know that the captain is strong-willed to let this affect him but it still is unacceptable behaviour from Sutton.

In other Rangers news, Ross Wilson may have played a blinder for Rangers after a shocking development in October that will leave many Gers fans surprised.
