Andy Walker questions Allan McGregor after Motherwell goal v Rangers

Andy Walker has questioned Allan McGregor’s involvement in Stuart McKinstry’s consolation strike for Motherwell against Rangers.

The 20-year-old whipped a wide free kick over the veteran’s head in the 76th minute to cause Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s team a nervy end to the game.

Luckily for McGregor, the Gers held on for all three points but nevertheless, Walker felt it was “uncharacteristic” for the shot-stopper to be caught out from such an angle.

Talking on Sky Sports [13:38, 16 October], he said: “It just dipped in over McGregor’s head, but it is not like him to be caught out like that – and now Motherwell are back in the game.”

It’s fair to say that McGregor has enough credit in the bank to make the odd mistake from time to time and to be fair to McKinstry the free kick was placed right in the top corner of the goal. Whether he meant it or not is a completely different question.

Although it wasn’t pretty, the win at Fir Park is massive for Giovanni van Bronckhorst, particularly after the defeat against Liverpool. The performances really do need to improve in the coming weeks and the Gers cannot rely upon the odd moment of magic to pull them towards a title push this season.

Van Bronckhorst must get a more consistent tune out of this group of players and demonstrate a clear and effective way of getting wins over the line domestically.

The Dutchman is stuck between a rock and a hard place in terms of how he wants his side to play at the moment. Of course, he wants an attractive progressive style of football to be played but he also needs wins and points on the board with the pressure slowly rising at Ibrox.

In other Rangers news, an official partner of the Gers has called on the board to sack van Bronckhorst and Ross Wilson.
