Allan McGregor ‘knows he’s done’ as Rangers goalkeeper suffers embarrassment v Motherwell – BBC Sportscene pundit

Allan McGregor got caught out by the flight of the ball when Stuart McKinstry scored for Motherwell against Rangers on Sunday, according to Neil McCann.

McKinstry, 20, scored a 77th-minute free-kick to ensure a tense ending to Rangers’ 2-1 win at Fir Park.

Many would suggest the Leeds loanee’s goal was a fluke as it looked as though it could have been intended as a cross from the wide area.

However, McCann has suggested that there was some intention from McKinstry, who sold McGregor into thinking he was crossing the ball to a fellow attacker, causing the 40-year-old goalkeeper to step out of his goal when he should have stuck to his line.

“I’ve done it myself when I’ve been encouraged to score from set-pieces and I’ve peeled it across the front of the goalkeeper to get a flick,” said McCann while on BBC Scotland’s Sportscene show on Sunday night (16 October, 07:33pm).

“I think Allan gets done by the flight of the ball. He takes a little half-step forward and then he knows he’s done.

“I mean, that’s right in the postage stamp, it’s unstoppable.”

Unlucky

It just goes to show that no amount of experience can stop you from being made to look a bit foolish sometimes.

McGregor had no idea McKinstry’s free-kick was going to go in and we doubt that many goalkeepers would have made the decision to stay on their line to attempt to save the goal-bound cross.

McKinstry is a young lad who’d never scored a senior goal in his career. He’s barely touched double-figures for the number of senior matches he’s played in.

Did he really mean to whip in a free-kick like that to beat a goalkeeper of McGregor’s ability?

No chance.

McGregor was left red in the face but that’s how the game goes sometimes and that’s one of the major hazards of being a goalkeeper because when you mess up, you usually concede.

We wish McKinstry all the best at Motherwell as he’s a bright, promising Scottish talent but Rangers, overall, were rotten yet again at Fir Park this weekend.

Something’s got to change.
