Rangers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst says club will assess free-agent options

Rangers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst says the club will assess the free-agent market after injuries have wreaked havoc on his squad.

Injuries to Connor Goldson, Ryan Jack, John Souttar and Filip Helander have left the Dutch boss with slim pickings at the back.

Van Bronckhorst confessed that Rangers will “look if there are free agents” but admitted at this moment in time there are players available who haven’t had many minutes.

“Of course, when you have so many options injured you look at the options you have in the academy. Options you have within the squad but also look if there are free agents,” said Van Bronckhorst as quoted by Rangers Review.

“But, at this moment in time, the free agents are players who haven’t played a lot recently or have just come back from injury so we are open for any possible additions but again, you have to have the right one. So, for now, we are not looking into bringing players in.”

Options.

It looks like Van Bronckhorst will look to his youth first to see if there are any talents who can quickly make the step up to first-team action before dipping into the free-agent market.

Nevertheless, Gers would be foolish not to get some experience in their ranks especially if a good opportunity arises on the market.

At the moment Rangers have two options, James Sands and Leon King, the latter may need some time just yet.

18-year-old King struggled in the UEFA Champions League against Liverpool on Wednesday evening and it could be confidence ruining starting him in Scottish Premiership games.

Sands is more of an attacking threat and provides a solid basis for defending too, he must be the go-to choice at the back for Van Bronckhorst if no free agent is signed.

On a positive note, Ben Davies is reportedly fit and raring to go for Motherwell which leaves Van Bronckhorst with one less selection headache to worry about.

In other Rangers news, Ross Wilson may have played a blinder for Rangers after a shocking development in October that will leave many Gers fans surprised.
