Rangers fans want Giovanni van Bronckhorst sacked – TalkSPORT host

Rangers fans want Giovanni van Bronckhorst to be sacked after the club were humiliated 7-1 by Liverpool in the Champions League, according to Adrian Durham.

The light blues were battered at Ibrox as they were eliminated from the Champions League with four defeats in four games, leaving the team on the verge of the worst group stage record ever.

And Durham, who was speaking to Ally McCoist and Alan Brazil on the talkSPORT breakfast show [13 October] says that fans told him after the game they had had enough and wanted the Dutchman gone after a complete lack of organisation during the game.

“Listen Rangers took the lead and the fans played their part,” he said. “The atmosphere as you know Ally was sensational, absolutely brilliant.

“Even with Goldson on the pitch they started doing silly things, giving the ball away. They seemed to lose their way. They kind of took the lead and it went to their heads a bit.

“I think the fans were still positive. Liverpool equalising and Goldson going off I think was a huge thing.

“From last season you take Calvin Bassey out of the team, he hasn’t really been replaced. You take Goldson out of that team now, it’s not just their best defender he’s a leader as well. He was the organiser of everything going on in front of him.

“You’ve got McGregor at the back, Goldson in front of him, you’re going to be a bit more organised. No way that collapse happens if Goldson stays on the pitch, but you can’t rely on that one player.

“It did happen. There was such a lack of organisation I think from Van Bronckhorst, and judging by the Rangers fans I spoke to at the game last night [12 October], I think a lot of them are thinking it’s time for him to go.”

Hard to argue

Van Bronckhorst has done a good job of maintaining the level of Rangers since the departure of Steven Gerrard, but he’s failed to really progress the team.

A great run in the Europa League papered over the cracks that saw the team crumble domestically and lose out on the title to Celtic, while they’ve been on the end of several hammerings since he’s been in charge.

There seems to be a big problem within his side that they crumble against top opposition if things don’t go their way immediately, and that’s something he’s never addressed.

Fans have every right to be sick of the poor performances in these huge games, and with no sign of the team improving at all under him maybe it is time to move him on.

There is also the case that he’s competing with a squad that wasn’t backed adequately in the summer and are way out of their depth against the elite, so he deserves time.

Either way, pressure is really ramping up now and he needs to do something special to turn it all around.
