Simon Jordan and Jim White argue over Rangers spending after Champions League loss v Liverpool

Simon Jordan and Jim White have clashed live-on-talkSPORT over Rangers spending after the Gers were beaten 7-1 by Liverpool at Ibrox.

Jurgen Klopp’s side ran away comfortable winners on Wednesday [12 October] and Jordan has suggested it’s to be expected considering the financial disparity between the two teams.

However, White disagreed and believes Rangers received enough money in transfer fees to be more competitive in the Champions League this season.

Jordan said on talkSPORT White and Jordan [10:10, 13 October]: “You can take this over to Ajax and say how do you feel about getting spanked 6-1 by Napoli in your back garden when you’re one of the perceived elite teams in Europe.

“They didn’t give Rangers a chance to be awful, they gave Rangers no chance whatsoever. I am not giving Giovanni van Bronckhorst a pass, I am looking at the reality of the situation.

“Liverpool have probably got the best part of £500million worth of talent on that pitch. Liverpool’s turnover is £500million, Rangers’ probably £70million at the very top.”

White interrupted: “Hang on a second Simon, they also got millions in through the sale of Calvin Bassey and from Joe Aribo. £23million for Bassey, £16million for Patterson, there’s the best part of £50million in those sales and about £25million for qualifying for the Champions League.”

Jordan responded: “The entire Scottish league get £40million, Liverpool play three games to achieve that. It’s a preposterous comparison. I don’t think Scottish football should be embarrassed.”

Good points

Jordan has made a good point and until something changes domestically in Scotland, the Old Firm will continue to be dispatched with ease in the Champions League. Yes, we all know Rangers should have invested more this summer but even if they had splashed £40million on some new additions, it’s still not a drop in the ocean for Premier League clubs.

The likes of Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal see that kind of money as back pocket change. Even clubs such as West Ham, Fulham and Leeds United spent a considerable amount in the summer.

Rangers

Gers’ fans are right to question why there was a lack of investment in Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s squad, and the board at Ibrox do need to provide answers as to where the money has gone.

However, even if the Gers had invested in the summer, the result at Ibrox last night would still have been very similar. The Ajax thrashing wouldn’t have been too much different, and Napoli would still have come away with three points.

Until more money is received domestically in Scotland, nothing will change when it comes to the Old Firms’ fortunes in the Champions League.

In other Rangers news, there’s been yet another high-profile exit from behind the scenes at Ibrox.
