Rangers: Ben Davies now a doubt for Motherwell clash on Sunday

Rangers’ defensive problems could have worsened with Ben Davis set to be assessed at Auchenhowie for an injury, according to The Athletic.

The Light Blues have already seen Connor Goldson limp off during their humiliating 7-1 loss at home to Liverpool which could leave him out of action for months [Daily Record].

With John Souttar and Filip Helander already on the sidelines long-term, Giovanni van Bronckhorst could have just two defensive options left in teenager Leon King and American James Sands, as reported by Jordan Campbell of The Athletic.

Lewis Mayo could have been an option for van Bronckhorst having impressed in the academy but he was loaned out to Kilmarnock and there is no recall option prior to the January transfer window.

Davies felt his injury creeping in during the Liverpool demolition but refused to come off having already seen Goldson limp off earlier in the game.

Crisis

Things could not get much worse for Rangers right now, particularly in defence, with only the very bare bones available to play against Motherwell on Sunday.

The boss does have temporary options of either John Lundstram or Borna Barisic who can fill in at centre-half if absolutely necessary but he would rather not at all costs.

This might actually be a good thing for King and Sands who now have to stand up and be counted as proper senior players rather than being classed as the token youngsters in the side.

Goldson has shepherded both through games at times but without his experience alongside them, they will need to prove that they can hold their own in the Premiership without being hand-held through it all.

Rangers are fortunate to have a goal machine like Antonio Colak leading the line which should mean the odd conceded goal domestically doesn’t make a huge difference overall.

In other Rangers news, the exact timeframe for Goldson’s injury has not yet been revealed but things are not looking good for the Englishman.
