Jordan Campbell: Giovanni van Bronckhorst one bad result away from Rangers pandemonium

The Athletic’s Jordan Campbell has suggested that Liverpool’s 7-1 victory over Rangers has left Giovanni van Bronckhorst one result away from “pandemonium”.

Liverpool put on a second-half demolition job to wipe the floor with van Bronckhorst’s side, with substitute Mohamed Salah scoring a record-breaking six-minute hat trick.

Rangers have now conceded 16 goals in four Champions League games and Campbell suggests the Gers can only capitulate so many times before the Dutchman’s position becomes “untenable”.

The Athletic journalist wrote (13 October): “There are only so many times a team can capitulate before it becomes untenable.

“Van Bronckhorst has come back from trouble before but this rout has left the manager a bad result away from pandemonium — again.”

Not wrong

Van Bronckhorst is probably one more thrashing away from having serious questions asked of his position at Rangers, particularly if it comes domestically.

The Dutchman shouldn’t be judged on their next Champions League clash against Napoli, with the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium probably the hardest place to go in Europe at the moment, apart from Manchester City. Realistically, Rangers are very unlikely to muster anything from their trip to Naples.

The 47-year-old will have to keep a near-perfect record domestically before the Gers face Celtic at Ibrox at the start of January. A league title and a domestic cup is now the bare minimum for Rangers, with Europa League qualification looking rather unlikely unless they can get a point in Naples.

Rangers have been thrashed four times already this season and for a fan base that is used to success, a change may well be needed to rejuvenate this group of underperformning players.

In other Rangers news, there’s been yet another high-profile exit from behind the scenes at Ibrox.
