Graham Spiers takes aim at Alfredo Morelos as Rangers suffer ‘humiliating’ loss v Liverpool

Times journalist Graham Spiers was stunned by how heavily Rangers lost to Liverpool at Ibrox in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

Jurgen Klopp’s men scored six second-half goals to win 7-1 against the Gers, who did go ahead in the 17th minute through Scott Arfield and were level at half-time.

Alfredo Morelos was substituted into the game in the 77th minute and Spiers has weirdly taken an issue with that, taking aim at the Colombian striker via his personal Twitter account.

“I said to my kids after Scott Arfield’s opener: ‘This will end 4-1 Liverpool’,” said Spiers, “Never imagining it would be as bad as seven.

“Humiliating for Rangers and the sight of Alfredo Morelos waddling on after 77 minutes did not fill me with any greater hope.

“Sobering.”

Bizarre

What is Spiers talking about?

We’ve just lost 7-1 and he’s talking about Morelos, making very clear suggestions about the Colombian’s fitness, even though he barely played.

Morelos being substituted into the game didn’t have a bearing on the result.

What did have an impact was Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s poor team selection, the lack of mental strength from the senior players and, if you dig deeper, a terrible recruitment strategy at the very top at Ibrox.

It’s almost 2023 and we’re still persisting with Borna Barisic at left-back.

James Tavernier is a club legend but not for his defensive work. Why hasn’t a solid right-back been signed up to replace Tavernier for games like this?

Why do we not have a proper right-winger?

Why is a teenager coming on to replace the most senior centre-back we’ve got, who’s now injured?

Why are we still relying on 33-year-old Arfield for goals and substituting 37-year-old Steven Davis on?

Our squad is a mess and we need an overhaul badly.

We’ve been saying that for years though.

In other Rangers news, van Bronckhorst was furious with one player after he made a mistake against Liverpool.
