Graham Spiers tips BBC’s Kenny Macintyre for ‘compassionate leave’ after Rangers vs Liverpool

Kenny Macintyre will be needing “compassionate leave” for four weeks after Rangers were thrashed by Liverpool, according to a joke by Graham Spiers.

The Gers went 1-0 up through Scott Arfield at Ibrox on Wednesday night (12 October), before a second half collapse left them on the wrong end of a demolition thanks to Mo Salah’s six-minute hat-trick.

Spiers himself was calling for the punishment to stop during the game, but had an ironic take on the state of Light Blues fan Macintyre who was having to work on BBC Sportsound after the result.

In a post on his personal Twitter account directed at Macintyre after the game on Thursday night (12 October) Spiers wrote: “Big Kenny Macintyre anchoring for BBC Sportsound tonight and has just uttered the words – his throat catching – “It’s Rangers’ worst defeat since 1957.”

“Paramedics at the BBC compound.

“Macintyre said to be “serious but stable”.

“The Beeb announce 4-week “compassionate leave”.”

Responding to a comment on the post he revealed his own reaction during the game, writing: “I was genuinely saying: “Please God, enough. No more.””

Demolition

There might be a few Bears fans who felt the need for time off today after a game which started so positively disappeared to be replaced by a truly awful result.

The three consecutive defeats to nil previously in the group were disappointing, and demonstrated a gulf in quality, but after finally finding the net in the competition the worst was still to come.

Ally McCoist highlighted the positives of the fact that it has been over a decade, and a battle back from the bottom of Scottish football, since the club were last in the Champions League, but it was difficult to feel very positive as goal after goal rained in.

Rangers

With an injury to Connor Goldson in game, and now possibly another one to Ben Davies [The Athletic], the damage threatens to spill over into the domestic campaign.

The run to the Europa League final last year generated belief that Rangers could compete against big clubs in Europe, but having finally made it back to the top table this season, that feeling has been devastatingly dismissed.

It’s not the first time that Spiers has made light of fellow journalist Macintyre after a Light Blues result, having also done so after a 1-1 draw with Dundee United back in February, but this time the situation was far worse.

In other Rangers news, Chris Sutton caused a big reaction with his response to a Gers incident against St Mirren.
